On Easter Sunday when all Christians celebrate the resurrection of the Jesus Christ, a group of extremist perpetrators had other plans. Nine (09) bombs were exploded by suicide attackers, killing and injuring hundreds of innocent civilians in several places in Colombo, Gampaha and Batticaloa districts.
The death toll of the ruthless Easter Sunday attacks in Sri Lanka has now risen up to 359. The foreign ministry officials said at least 45 foreign nationals were among the dead. All the attacks were suicide bomb attacks with the intension of causing maximum casualties.
As the largest humanitarian service provider in Sri Lanka, the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society (SLRCS) has been involving in relief services from the onset of the explosions providing First Aid, Psychosocial First Aid, Restoring Family Links services patient transportation and dead body management services.
Needs Assessments are now underway to determine the needs of the families who were affected by the attacks as the SLRCS intend to launch a medium and long-term recovery initiatives targeting the survivors, and affected families using the raised funds.
Funds raised will go towards the following initiatives;
• Restoring Family Links
• Provide psychological First Aid and improvements of psychological well-being of the victims and their families
• Provide assistance to meet the immediate and long-term needs of the victims and their family members
• Create self-help groups to facilitate people to share their experiences and grieve
• Conduct recreational activities and provide educational support for the children who lost their parents/guardians
